Photo finish?

Yesterday I sewed scraps on my sewing table into wonky log cabin blocks,
using blue squares and following a loose blue/pink colour scheme.
It's the beginning of something, and the blocks sewn together
measure 18 by 21 inches.
Maybe a baby quilt?
So I auditioned some fabrics, using this pink/red dot as the first try.
Not bad, but not quite there.
Then a pink text print, which doesn't add anything to the centre,
but it's one of the few pink pieces of yardage I have in my stash.

How about the blue toile?
Maybe a bit better, but still washed out, especially compared
to the saturated colours in the Kaffe scraps in the blocks.

Lime green does the trick, but this is supposed to be the backing fabric
for my orange to blue colourwash string quilt.

See how pretty the green (grass) looks with it?
I've sewn it together and it measures about 48 by 60.

So what if the log cabin centre is bordered with green
to make the back of the colourwash quilt?

Nothing like a some natural light and a digital camera
to figure out a design problem.

I'm linking up the the Needle and Thread Network.

Wow! It will be a bright, fresh two-sided quilt. I love to see you auditioning of fabrics. The green is totally unexpected and brilliant!

Love this two sides quilt. The green was a surprise for me, too. I have found that rainbow quilts or quilts with lots of colors sometimes look nice with a skinny yellow inner border followed by a larger outer green border.

I enjoy following your process to arriving at a choice. I loved the first fabric, but I agree, the log cabin block looks great surrounded by green, so I think you chose right!

I'm one of those that hand quilt so I wouldn't want extra seams in my backing - hence I would go with a solid piece of fabric. I love the fact that you could create such a nice log cabin out of scraps and it would really make a nice baby quilt. Have fun with whatever you choose to do with it. I liked the process of your thinking. To each her own...

Amen to the value of the digital camera in the design process . . .

LOVE the quilt (front AND back)!!!!

It's amazing what the camera "sees". It's a very useful design tool.

I was going to suggest, if you hadn't come up with the idea already, to back the colourwash quilt with the lime green bordered log cabin. Great minds obviously think alike!

The colors all go together so nicely. How great, to get two quilts in one!

Great looking quilt tops you have there. Your grass is dry enough to put quilts on. It is raining here again and again. We have had four hours of lightening tonight (south of Edmonton).

thanks for showing the process that you used to arrive at a great conclusion! The quilt will be fantastic on both front and back when it is complete!
