I found these skeins of hemp thread,
called shoe thread,
at an antique store for $1 each.
The bin said it dated back to 1946.
That means my new skein of thread is 66 years old.
Apparently hemp was used for string and thread after the Second World War
because of a shortage of jute.
I bought two sizes -- no. 8 and no. 10.
I'm going to use one in my household
and the other is a gift.

Yes, an often overlooked part of our history, isn't it. My husband has talked about having to get the hemp plants out of his family's fields once everyone decided they were illegal; the shame being it was probably, by comparison to what is feared today, fairly benign.
A couple of weeks ago, I found a package of specialty needles at an estate sale. The pack had its original price sticker of 29 cents, so they only charged me a quarter, saying "brand new, it's only 29 cents, so we sure can't charge more than that now, can we?" Nope. I handed them their quarter and said thanks! :)
Not quite the same as hemp tho!!
