Showing my true colours in some Friday finishes

Earlier this year my mother gave me a 20-strip roll-up
of the True Colors line by Anna Maria Horner,
which I augmented with a package of charm squares.

Last weekend I turned both sets of pre-cuts into usable objects
by dividing them by colourways.
(Yes, I put a U in colour -- I'm Canadian!).

I used the greens and blues in a little drawstring backpack.
This is a class sample for a Learn to Sew bags course I'm teaching in October,
but it's also a useful size for carrying a book, wallet, keys, and phone.

I made a doll blanket for my favourite two-year-old
from the yellow/pink/purple squares and strips,
and backed it with some bright flannel leftover from another project.

I quilted the two layers with a simple diagonal
and now it's ready for some serious dolly cuddling.
I used the leftover strips in some string piecing,
so now I've used up all the bits.

Two small Friday finishes

Groovy doll blankets, 15 by 20

I'm off to a retreat this weekend,
celebrating the treats that come from hanging with friends
and playing with fabric.

I tested out my retreat machine with these two doll blankets
made for a pair of sisters.
I use my Singer Featherweight mostly out of home,
so I tested out my tensions
and my hopping foot.

Everything checked out great,
and my FW is packed in the car ready to go.

Baby, you look so good and a giveway!

My circa 1970 baby doll, wearing new duds.

My mother wanted to give away a life-sized baby doll to a little girl
who recently moved to Canada from Bolivia and had to leave her dolly behind.
The doll she had (not mine pictured here) came unclothed from a yard sale,
and my mother used it to model a lacy crocheted dress not appropriate for play.

So I got out the bright flannels, some already pre-cut into squares
and made a layette.

Here's my doll modelling the patchwork blanket,
two bright diapers (with red velcro) at the right
and a fun polka dot nightgown.

That same fabric is on the back of the blankee.

This was a little fun Labour Day sewing
which I hope will brighted a little girl's day.
