This Easter, I tie-dyed a dozen eggs using silk ties, and the results are lovely for the most part. One egg didn't take any dye at all, so I suppose the tie wasn't silk, but polyester. I found a tutorial here and it is quite easy. I wrapped the ties in the silk, then covered them with a square of unbleached muslin and boiled the eggs for 25 minutes. The muslin also took on some of the colour of the ties, as well as a muddy purple from the mixture of colours in the pot.
Here you can see the original tie pattern in the centre of the fabric.
Here's all 12 of the muslin pieces. I've ironed them to set the dye and I'm thinking how to use them. Maybe some little priority quilts, or pieced together for a quilt back?
I was also the lucky recipient today of a half-metre of Holland batik fabric (56 inches wide) in lovely golds and blacks. Thanks, Yvonne.
And just a little bit of shopping on my way to my mother-in-law's house. Shirley's Sewing Room in Moosimin, Saskatchewan had these Kaffe Fassett prints at $7.50 a metre. I bought 1.5 of the floating flower print at the left and a metre of the paisley at the right. Look at the nice colour dots on the selvege! So I need opinions on the pronunciation of the designer's name: does it rhyme with "cassette" or is it more like "faucet"? How about the first name? In my knitting days, I'd heard it pronounced to rhyme with "Rafe" or "safe" but the quilters around here seem to pronounce it more like "Cafe".
Note: Laura from Prairie Peasant comments that the designer says his name rhymes with "Safe Asset" which is how I was saying it until I heard some quilters use another pronunciation. Thanks!
