Last weekend I sewed together 3.5 inch squares to make a scrappy heart quilt, based on the free pattern by
Cindy Carter, She suggests using 2.5 inch squares, but I had dozens of red ones in my 3.5 inch box, so I went with that. I know these are uglies and oldies, but together they make a nice heart. Between seams, I sewed together more red squares as leaders and enders, enough to make borders and end up with a 36 inch square baby quilt. I did cut the white borders because I didn't have many light squares, but otherwise, this quilt is from
Bonnie's Scrap User system which I love.
Here's the whole quilt, with blue cornerstones. My guild friend, blogless Heather, helped me layer and machine quilt it on her lovely Elna the other day. I did OK, but my machine quilting skills aren't great. I'm still working on it at home on my 40-year old Elna SP, and my after-market walking foot is putting in some ripples and my tension isn't great. Sigh. But it is nearly ready to be bound and washed and then donated to the local children's hospital.

I think oldies and uglies give the quilt character. I LOVE this quilt....great use of scraps!!

It's gorgeous. I'm wondering. This would make a wonderful Quilts 4 Leukaemia quilt. Have you donated it to a child yet? Are there any children in your local hospital who have Leukaemia and would you be willing to add it to the Q4L quilts.

All together the uglies and oldies are quite heart warming, and make a "lovely" quilt. I think you are procrastinating on another project though! ;-)
I love it!!! Guess this oldie is a sucker for oldies!!! And uglies if when you just look at a small section they are beautiful!!!

Those hearts are a great way to use up red bits - I think I might have to make a Valentine's day quilt! (Sewing with red fabric in one of my favorite things to do!)
They may be oldies but they are not uglies when you get done with them! Beautiful quilt.
That turned out great! Isn't it nice when you can use mostly scraps and make something beautiful out of them. I love Bonnie's scrap user system. I tihnk my next quilt is going to be a real scrappy one. Too many and they are starting to migrate to other bins.
Your quilt came out great! I too love Bonnie's system, and when all put together, the oldies and uglies become beautiful, like the ugly duckling!
Don't worry too much about the less-than-perfect quilting. Washing and drying will hide a multitude of sins, and some child will love it in spite of any supposed flaws.
Your quilt is adorable! Don't worry about your machine quilting. Whoever gets the quilt will LOVE it!

I love, love, love the things you are doing! They're all so fresh and pretty--those spider webs are just fabulous. I laughed when you said "I have lots of strings left in the bin. funny how this doesn't seem to make a dent in the string bin". When I pieced the first string top I ever made, I thought I'd really use up lots of scraps--but I couldn't tell I'd touched them! Strings make beautiful quilts from very small pieces, which is why quilters were making them in the first place. They sure brighten my life today, though. Nancy Ray

Isn't it amazing how those 'uglies'
just seem to fade away when they are cut spliced and diced and mixed in with others!! Those 'uglies' turned into a sweet little cutie!!!
