Here's the whole piece. Originally, I thought I would make a small purse or bag, but now I'm not sure. I'm quite intrigued by the dots and the density of the piece, since I overlapped the selvages so none of the colour print would show, which means it is three layers thick.
I just showed this to the grade 7 math geek in my house and instead of colours and circles, he saw numbers. Interesting.
This was the pile of selvages I started with. I've only been collecting for a few months, but these things multiply when I'm not looking.
I have lots of b/w selvages from collecting b/w fabrics, and mostly in half-metre cuts, so the selvages are more or less the same length. I pieced three white prints and three black prints together without a foundation, cut them into squares, and made a nine-patch.
And since I'd already had the pile of selvages on the table, I just kept going. I made two tea cozies (two sides each) from the red and b/w ones, mixed in with a few novelties. I tried some simple variations, and on these, I have the fabric print showing. Here's the weekend's worth of selvages, not including what's left on the cutting table. I've set aside the bits with words and the shaggy ones (I'm not terribly keen on those, but I have several) for another day.

these have turned out really well. being the sort of scrap quilter I am I'd never thought of sorting selvedges by their colour or what's on the edge....
You've been busy! I can tell you've missed sewing while doing your papers for school! These look great. I'm currently collecting selvages for a future project too. They look like so much fun. Interesting that your math geek only noticed the numbers!
Wow, I can't believe what you are doing with selvages! I have a bag full of them for you if you still want more.
fun. I keep thinking the manufacturers will start including even more dots on the selvages.
Love what you're doing - I've also started separating my B&W selvages in hopes of using them for a small project before year's end - also a set of placemats on the horizon with the colorful ones I already have is near the top of my list ... who'd have thought the EDGES would be such fun!
Excellent way to recycle!
Interesting idea. You have more stamina than I. The results are the proof of the pudding. Nice work.
Really fun. I just love the B&W one!
Oh I just love your selvage collection. The black and whites look great. I think I'll do a little selvage begging at our guild meeting this week. Isn't Karen Griska's blog so inspiring?
