I need advice on finishing my challenge quilt

I've got 19 blocks using marbled fabric as a background. Eight of them are from my guild's mystery challenge last year, and the others I made in the Friday Block Party. I'm going to make a word block for the last block, fyi.
I've laid them out on the solid black that's in some of the blocks (top half of the photo) and a Robert Kaufmann print of roses (bottom half). I've got closer shots below, with the solid at the left. Which do you prefer? Or should I eliminate the sashing all together and just join the blocks? You can click on the photos to enlarge.

Thanks to Pam of Passionate Purple Quilter for her package of selvages, many of them purple, as well as a whole bunch from The Very Hungry Caterpillar fabrics. I'm going to have fun with these. She also sent a needle case in bright fabrics (what, no purple???), which I'm going to put in my quilting bag.

this is just thinking out loud, but, the other day, somewhere in blog land, I saw a fabulous quilt with a sashing made of 4 patches!! Would this work for this quilt top?? It could pull all the colours together, the black to me seems so stark, but then again, photo's don't always show the true look of the way it looks in person.
All the sashing around the blocks was pieced. It really was a great look. It would mean more sewing, but it might work on this project... just a thought.

Between the solid and the roses, I vote for the solid (but very narrow sashing - cut maybe 1-1/2" to finish at 1") ...

I would also vote for the solid. My quilt novice question is: Will you make all the blocks the same size, or what is your plan to deal with the different sized blocks?

the solid black -- the other looks washed out to me....

I'm a big fan of black when there are lots of colors. I think it sets them off best.
Nice photo of your toes! Lol.

I should have said solid black.

I lean towards Brenda's assessment re: pieced sashing and the black being so stark. Though I generally favor a big jolt of black and plenty of contrast, I'm thinking the blocks would like to be part of a light quilt rather than have the dark sashing.

I like the solid black. I've seen quilts such as your's and they had black sashing. I think it works with all the different block sizes and colours. Good luck deciding and show us the finished product.

I would vote for the roses. Unless your sashing is 4", you won't be able to see them but I think the shading would be better than the solid black. I do think that sashing would make the blocks stand out great.

I am glad you received the package. I thought you would like the bright colors for a needlecase. You can add more "pages" for more needles if you would like.

The black IS kinda stark, but the place where you have 3 smaller blocks kinda 'off' is the most interesting to me. When they are all lined up in a row, they look kinda regimented ... you might want to consider dropping a few out, and staggering them 'puzzle-like'. It that black or very dark blue?

If it was mine, I would consider putting a narrow dark border around each, then using a lighter/ or something else in the sashing, and add a few simple block fillers and kinda mix it up by off setting some. Of course, all that is MORE work!

Ok if these two are the only options I like the RK with the roses. It breaks it up a bit. But Personally I would use a white sashing. The blocks would look like they were floating then. My eye is always drawn to the darkest color of a quilt first. So When I look at your quilt I see the sashing.

I was going to vote for the roses, but after reading these comments I went back to see if a light sashing would be better, and I like that idea a lot. This is going to be an awesome quilt whichever way you go! Post the finished quilt:)
