Meanwhile, a little thrift shopping unearthed this vintage linen calendar towel from 1975. It's well worn, but I thought it was worth 25 cents. It's so green and gold and 70s, yet not so different from recent prints in fabrics and clothes. I'm going to use it for pockets on a tote bag that some lucky person will get for Christmas.

I need advice on my advice quilt
My Advice From Home Quilt for Tonya's class has been together for several weeks, but I finally got a human quilt holder in place so I could get a picture. It measures about 55 by 60, more square than I had wanted, and a bit short for a throw for a tall teenage boy. I'm considering taking off the bottom border and adding another row of something -- maybe my son's names with some hearts, or some more word fabric. But I can't decide.

That advice quilt is gorgeous!
Great idea you have with the dishtowl calender! And minds do think alike, I make quilted bags to sell on etsy and have been watching auctions for vintage hand towels to turn into a bag or to accessorize a bag for a couple months now! Alas, I haven't won any auctions and apparently everyone alround here LOVES their vintage towels since none are turning up at the goodwill, LOL!
great quilt!
maybe you could hang the quilt in your home just the way it is.
Fun to look at and I bet it will make you smile everytime you pass it!
otherwise I guess you need to add another row if you want to take a nap under it :)
great job ...
someday I hope to make a quilt like this
The quilt looks great. The vintage towel is definitely 70's, a look that I liked then and still like today. I'll be watching to see how you use it.
Your advice from home quilt is just super! Your call on whether to make it bigger. Perfect borders for that quilt, too.
Had to laugh about how you made your wreath -- I have an entire needlepoint piece hanging in my home that I made while studying for a huge exam. My breaks were always to do some stitching.
Your advice quilt looks great! Love the boarders you've added!
To lengthen some, perhaps you could add a 4 to 5 inch cross-cut, strip-pieced boarder of all your scrap colors to the top and bottom. Also, perhaps have a 2 inch lengthwise strip or two (to make a 2 inch width) down each side that blends into the top and bottom pieced boarders? Just a thought? 8-)
Happy stitchings!
I love it just the way it is...maybe he can just bend his legs? :)
How about some wonky stars at the top?
I love the idea of "pockets on totes" with the calendar.
I really love the advice quilt. The quilt block looks much more fun than a term paper. I don't blame you for doing it instead.
My advice on the advice quilt is to put the recipients name and the year made or their name, your name the year as an additional border on the bottom. this quilt is sooooo awesome......great job!

I agree with Anonymous above. Maybe even put something about 'feet'??? but a date, and name or just more ... stuff ... to make it long enough. Guys like their feet covered (that is from my DH who insists HIS quilts be long enough to cover his feet, since he is overly tall.
REally awesome quilt - hope he loves it as much as I love it! 8-)
I have a solution for your quilt. Fold it up carefully, put it in a box, and send it to me. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200....
Seriously, don't take it apart, and don't add anything. Dunno how big your teenage boy is, that would cover my 28 year old up to his shoulders, and for a quilt to nap under, that's all he needs. My son would turn it diagonally to tuck under his feet, and then wiggle around so the whole thing covered him up.
I love this.
Make it longer!!! DH & I just spent an hour laying all my quilts in progress out on standard sized twin/double/queen spreads so I can adjust the size. As much as I don't want to admit that he is right - at least the quilt I am working on today - I need to make an entire extra row, which means unpicking part of the sashing to insert stars and making more string border blocks. But at the end of the day, when all is said and done - I do want the quilt to be used and loved and LONG enough for a bed... so it must grow... we have plenty of odd sized quilts around here already and the backs of the couches are full. That being said, I do love, love, love your quilt - it truly is wonderful!
Cheers!
Evelyn
Wonderful advice quilt! Love it as is.
If it were me, I would add a row at the bottom and maybe the top as well. I like the suggestion of stars at the top. My sons are not overly tall but if they were and this quilt was for one one of them I would have to add the admonition to "eat!"
Ah... 1975 - what a great year! I love the hand towel and I especially love how the colours and art "work" with today's styles and trends. Reminds me of this weekend when I pulled out my barbies for my nieces and they loved how retro the barbies are (tall white boots and flashy hot pink dresses!).
Your advice quilt is fabulous!!!
