One could call this my first liberated quilt. I made this blanket out of wool melton coat scraps and leftover yardage in 1991. I used to make a lot of wool parkas, and I still have a bag of leftover melton and duffle that was expensive 20 years ago ($35/metre). I used this in my car, and one memorable Easter weekend, it was our blanket for the night when my husband and I got stranded by a spring storm on the highway. Originally I had just butted the strips and sewn with a wide zig zag, but some of the strips were pulling apart, so I put it away. There's a few moth holes in it, but overall it's in good shape, so yesterday I found a roll of navy bias tape and serpentine stitched it over the seams. It's not beautiful in the construction, but definitely functional for an emergency in the car. It measures 44 by 60, and its really heavy and warm. And I like the graphic quality of it.
I still have a huge bag of assorted melton and duffle scraps -- I'm thinking I'll dig into it for some applique projects this winter.

It's beautiful as well as functional. Sewing through all that wool melton must be quite a challenge.
lots of contrast brings the design into sharp focus on this one...
I love your solution. very cozy.
I'm a sucker for those colours.
It's great.
