See a pattern here?

I have a thing for strings. When I sewed together Y's birthday quilt (bottom right) earlier this month, I realized I've made a few string quilts in my time. Y's quilt was influenced by the blue and green one right beside it, which was the first string quilt I made back in 2007, influenced by various string quilts I saw on the web. I sewed the strings on a paper foundation, which I don't recommend doing unless you like ripping off paper. I finally quilted it last summer and gave it to my nephew for his high school graduation.

A year later, my guild made our first group quilt using the same method, but on fabric foundations and without sashing. That one is the one at the left in the middle. I've made a few more collaborative string quilts, including the two in the centre of the top row. All the others are just mine. Quite the bunch, eh?

Any one else there have a thing for strings? How about a string thing along? Make this winter the season of strings and we'll post our results as we go along. Let me know in the comments if you want to string along some strings. More details to follow.

I love your string quilts, especially the one that was gifted to your nephew

I do NOT like tearing off paper.

I'm not even such a fan of stringing onto foundation fabric, but I do understand the need in some situations.

So, yes, please keep me in the loop for your string along!

String along some strings...sounds interesting and I just happen to have a big bag of strings multiplying in the bottom of the sewing room closet!

Yes, I have strings and the need to use them up. [Not going to happen. I have TOO many. But time to winnow them down!]

I love everything about string quilts, even don't mind taking off the paper!

I have enough traditional string blocks for two queen sized quilts, but still have two boxes full of strings to use. And they keep getting replenished! So sure, I"ll be seeing what's going on here and just might join in!

I too love string quilts and have made quite a few. Yours are wonderful!
I have started digging into my "old and forgotten" stash lately and have been thinking about cutting some of it into strings. I see string quilts in my future, so I am interested in hearing more about your string along.

wonderful. I completely understand the attraction to string quilts. so you'd recommend stringing onto a fabric foundation? that makes some sense to me, but I've never tried it. don't think it would work well for string stars - can only imagine the problems with lots of seams meeting..

I "heart" strings. The only time I've down them on a fabric foundation was for Strawberries & Cream last year. I did a block years ago for Mary Johnson's Heartstrings, but normally I just wing it and press and press and press. The Monster wasn't foundation pieced.

I've got lots of strings left over from The Monster so would love to use them up.

I love string quilts and these are great fun. Just curious...how did you feel about foundation piecing on fabric? Or do you think you'd rather just sew strings with no foundation? Still learning all this stuff, would love to know your opinion. Thanks!

I have a string UFO that I HAVE TO finish this year so I am glad to know that when I make some progress on it or finish it, I've got a place to share!

I discovered string quilts late last year and have fallen deeply in love. I love the scrappy look of them and I like that I don't have to do a lot of measuring and can just go with the flow. I'm working on one right now for myself. It's the first one I've ever made and am calling it "Happy, Happy! Joy, Joy!" It's on my blog.
I can't imaging ripping away paper foundations. I've read that if you use the right needle and stitch length, it's easy, but I don't even want to try it. I use muslin as a foundation and trim away the edges so that the seams aren't too bulky.
I've got a lot of projects with deadlines right now, so I don't think I'll string along, but I will check back to see everyone's projects. :)
